How quintessentially Christmas, in a refreshing yet traditional form of decoration which has roots dating back to 1839 Hamburg, Germany.
Traditionally a Lutheran practice, the Advent Candle Centrepiece (known as in Adventskranz in German) is a creative innovation by Pastor Johann Wichern who managed an orphanage.
An old wagon wheel fitted with 20 small red candles and 4 large white candles to be lit on Sundays. What a great way to display the countdown to Christmas for excited children eagerly awaiting the 25th of December!
The modern day wreath sees the number of candles reduced to just four. One candle for each Sunday leading up to Christmas.
WHICH COLOUR CANDLES GO ON AN ADVENT WREATH & WHAT DO THEY SYMBOLISE?
The four candles symbolise themes such as peace, joy, hope and love.
Historically, the candles and red and white. In liturgical settings, the candles can be a combination of purple and pink, with a fifth white candle.
Fast forward to 1860, and we see a little more green added to the wagon wheel. Green fir branches added to the wreath to symbolise everlasting life.
